The Foil & Specialty Effects Association (FSEA), Topeka, Kan., and Mohawk Fine Papers, Cohoes, N.Y., will showcase their latest ‘green’ project at Print09, September 11-16, at Chicago’s McCormick Place. Recently launched at the IADD•FSEA Odyssey in Atlanta this past May, the folding carton entitled ‘Food for Thought’ was the result of a collaborative effort involving 10 different organizations across the U.S. According to FSEA Executive Director Jeff Peterson, “The FSEA teamed up with Mohawk Fine Papers and several other organizations in the printing, finishing, and folding carton industries to present earth-friendly packaging with eye-catching appeal.”
Production
Comprised of 18pt. 80 percent recycled Mohawk Renewal stock, the carton was printed 8-up in 4-color process with 2 spot PMS colors and aqueous coated prior to the show. In separate Techshop™ sessions during the Odyssey, the sheets first were foil stamped and multi-level embossed on a Majestic Series M-106ES 40” foil stamping/embossing press from Diversified Graphic Machinery (DGM). In a second session at the Odyssey, the carton flats were folded and glued on a Signature Model 110 SLB folder/gluer from American International Machinery (AIM).
Once again at Print09, the carton will run live on the show floor in both the DGM booth 3613 and the AIM booth 4814. Finished cartons will be distributed at the FSEA booth 5627 and the Mohawk booth 133. “Running the project live at the show gives attendees the opportunity to see and feel the Mohawk Renewal stock first-hand, witness its supreme workability/stampability, and promote the organizations’ newest and ever-growing green initiative,” stated Pam McGuire, print production manager at Mohawk Fine Papers.
Carton Design and Theme
The carton’s theme and design conveys an emphasis on environmental preservation while at the same time, showcases the shelf-appeal and high impact that value-added processes such as foil stamping and embossing can bring to a product.
The primary goal of the project was to promote education and awareness on the recyclability of foil decorated paper and board, as well as to showcase the workability/printability/stampability of recycled stocks. The carton helps to promote the FSEA’s most recent green initiative – a 11-page study compiled by Pira International, Surrey, UK, a third party research firm, confirming the recyclability and repulpability of foil-decorated paper and board. “It has become quite apparent that this study is extremely important to the long-term health of our industry and association,” stated Peterson. “We are very excited with the positive findings of the study and are making every effort to communicate these findings to the graphic arts and packaging industries as quickly as possible.”
The main conclusion from the study validates the recyclability of paper products decorated by both the traditional hot stamp and new cold foil processes. In addition, the study finds that neither hot nor cold foil-decorated products would give rise to problems found in other decorating processes that may render the decorated paper products unsuitable for recycling. Copies of the study are ready for distribution and can be obtained by calling the FSEA at (785) 271-5816 or by visiting the FSEA booth 5627 at Print09 for special show pricing.
About the FSEA
For over 15 years, the FSEA has worked towards industry awareness and growth – transforming paper and board with the shine of foil and the dimension of embossing. Now as the Foil & Specialty Effects Association (still FSEA), it continues to serve as a cohesive resource and educational platform for all decorative finishing processes, providing members with the tools and knowledge necessary to grow their businesses. From foil stamping and embossing to emerging technologies such as cold foil, specialty UV coatings and laminates, laser cutting and more, the Foil & Specialty Effects Association continues to strengthen the industry at large through education, seminars, statistical surveys, reference tools, green initiatives, technical conferences, trade show exhibition, and advertising.
